Coach S.M. “Mac” Steele

Mr. Samuel M. “Mac” Steele was a constant presence at Osawatomie High School from 1926-1968.  He was a teacher, coach, counselor and finished up as the athletic director.  He spent most of those 42 years as the head coach for the football, basketball and track and field teams.  He coached many of those years without the aid of an assistant coach.

Coach Steele roamed the sidelines for 34 seasons leading the Trojans football squad to over 140 wins, the most wins in school history.  This includes a winning record against rival Paola Panthers and records of 6-1-1 in 1942, 8-2 in 1947 and his best season in 1954 finishing with an 8-1 record.

Coach Steele is also the leader in wins for the OHS boys basketball team.  He guided the boys to over 230 victories during his tenure.  He had many successful seasons, but his best years were the 1946-47 season with a 14-1 record, the 1926-27 season with a 15-2 record and the 1947-48 season with a 14-4 record.  The 1947-48 squad also earned a trip to the state tournament, the 1st ever trip in school history.  The current gym at Osawatomie High School is also named the ‘Mac’ Steele Gymnasium in his honor.

Coach Steele also played a part in the naming of the Osawatomie High School football and basketball teams according to Charles Holloway, class of 1934.  He went before the student body at an assembly and asked them to vote on a name.  The name Trojan was selected because all OHS teams were strong, hardworking and determined.  The thought being that the name Trojan signified more clearly the description of the teams of Osawatomie High.

Coach Steele was named to the KSHSAA Hall of Fame in 1977.

Coach Steele was married to Maxine Meek Steele and they had one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Samuel McDowell Steele, Jr. & Olivia Smith Steele.  He also has one grandson, Andrew Steele (Jennifer).  Coach Steele passed away in 1976 at the age of 73.  His wife preceded him in death and his son passed away in 2018.  He is survived by his daughter-in-law, grandson and grandson’s wife.

Please welcome to the Osawatomie High School Athletic Hall of Fame Coach “Mac” Steele.

Eddie shined as well on the hardwood for the red and white.  He led OHS in scoring, averaging about 16 points a game his senior campaign, scoring more than 20 points 6x with a high of 27.

Eddie taught 4 years and coached at Lincoln High School in Kansas City, MO.  He worked for 23 years for AT&T as Production Manager.  He took early retirement and returned to teaching special needs kids.

Rick was rewarded with a full ride scholarship to the University of Kansas to play football for the Jayhawks.  We never got to see that come to fruition as Rick was tragically killed a few days before his high school graduation.  According to the Osawatomie Graphic-News people would remember the spirit, determination and high ideals of a winning young man.  Rick was the son of the late Clifford and Norma Stephens.
